The Returning Player Tax
A plain-English grade for how much relearning, resetting, and inventory archaeology a returning player faces.
Returning to a long-running game can mean more than remembering the controls. Progression resets, new mandatory systems, changed economies, invalidated gear, and seasonal requirements all add friction.
The grades
- A — Easy return: The game provides a clear route back and preserves most useful knowledge.
- B — Some reading required: Important systems changed, but a short briefing should be enough.
- C — Expect a confused evening: Several changes interact and old habits may mislead you.
- D — Your inventory has become archaeology: Major systems, gear, or progression assumptions have moved on.
- F — Begin by opening six wiki tabs: Returning resembles onboarding for a different game.
The grade describes friction, not quality. A brilliant expansion can still charge a very high tax.
